The Real BTS of an Abuja Entrepreneur
Dating an Entrepreneur in Nigeria: A Love Story You Didn’t Sign Up For
Let’s start with the truth, dating an entrepreneur in Nigeria should come with a health warning.
Because one minute they’re talking about “our future,” and the next, they’re calculating profit margins, designing packaging, or begging NEPA to bring light so they can finish an order. 😩
It’s not a relationship; it’s an emotional boot camp. Out of every 10 moments, only 2 are peaceful. The other 8? Chaos, stress, silence, and unexpected mood swings.
1. You’re Basically in a Throuple. You, Them, and Their Business
Forget romance; you’re competing with the hustle. You’ll be mid-conversation, and they’ll suddenly say, “Wait, let me reply this client.”
You can’t even get jealous because the client will win every time.
Their business isn’t just a job, it’s their baby, their identity, their whole personality. You’re not dating a person; you’re dating a dream in human form.
2. Mood Swings Come with the Territory
If you ever want to test your emotional strength, date an entrepreneur.
One day they’re high on wins, excited, full of ideas, promising you Maldives. The next day, one client cancels and they’re questioning life itself.
Entrepreneurship in Nigeria is not soft. It comes with power outages, unstable systems, unpredictable markets, and mental exhaustion. So if you’re dating one, understand that sometimes, their silence isn’t distance, it’s survival.
3. BP Check, Please
Honestly, dating an entrepreneur means you both need to check your BP.
They’re stressed about sales; you’re stressed about their stress. You’ll hear things like “I just need one more investor,” or “Let me just survive this month,” at least twice a week.
You’ll want to help, but you’ll also want to run.
4. The “Soft Life” Is Still Loading
You’ll get promises like, “Once this business picks up, we’ll travel,” or “When this project lands, you’ll see enjoyment.”
But the soft life seems to be stuck in traffic somewhere between hope and hustle. Still, you stay because you see how hard they’re trying, and their passion pulls you in every time.
5. The Love Is Real, Just a Little Delayed
Entrepreneurs love deeply, but their love language is time in batches. They’ll miss calls, forget dates, and sometimes talk business while you’re trying to be romantic, but when they show up, they mean it.
Their world moves fast, their hearts beat heavy, but they genuinely want to build something lasting in business and in love.
6. If You’re Dating One, Be Patient, Not Passive
Understand their grind, but also remind them they’re human. Encourage rest, remind them to eat, and celebrate the small wins with them.
Because truth is, your presence might just be the balance they didn’t know they needed.
In the End…
Dating an entrepreneur in Nigeria is not for the weak.
It’s laughter, breakdowns, delayed dates, and late-night calls mixed with dreams, ambition, and grit.
But when you find that one who still chooses love through the madness, hold them tight.
Because in this world of 8 fails and 2 wins, you might just be their biggest win yet. 💛
